Sail with Courtney, August 28th, 2010
Click here for the official Sail With Courtney Web Site
Once up on a time a child was born, she was the pride of her Father. As she grew, she and her father did many things together. She loved the water like an fish. Sailing and swimming were the fare for the summers, but little girls don't stay little.
At the age of 20 she was diagnosed with breast cancer (the sixth youngest in the US at that time.) She had to leave college to receive health care. Surgery and two rounds of chemo and radiation. She never loss her smile or her zest for life. She never complained about the pain. Her Father found strength in her. Two years passed.
She fell during a dance practice and landed on her tail bone (nothing that any other dancer has not done.) She kept rehearsing and preforming, ignoring the pain that did not seem to get better. She awoke one morning and had trouble walking. Doctor appointments were made and scans were ordered. The cancer was now in her spine. She started radiation.
Courtney battled the cancer throughout 2008, inspiring many people and lending support to fellow cancer patients. There are many stories of how she inspired others by her acts. Courtney had only one fear.
Wednesday morning, very early, Courtney was awake and some what aleart. I was setting at her bed side and she was touching my face. She kept saying over and over again as she was stroking my face; "Daddy, please remember me". I asured her that I would never forget her and also asured her that she had touched so many lives that she had changed the world. She said thank you daddy, "The World needed changing."
It rained record totals for Chicago in September 2008. Late Sunday night and early Monday morning the sky cleared. The full moon was high in the night sky. Like the line from one of Courtney favorite songs "the lights will guide you home" The Heavens opened up for her! The stars and the moon to guide her way. That is when and how she chose to leave us. Courtney was 23 years old.
The exerts above were taken from Courtney's Father Budd's entries on AnythingSailing. If you would like to read more about Courtney's story, you can on Anything Sailing - My Wish.

Sail with Courtney will be a gathering of her family, friends and the boating community. A day to enjoy sailing as she did, remember her and all those who have been taken too soon by Breast Cancer.
A group rate has been arranged at Reef Point Marina in Racine, WI ($1.30/ft.) Make your reservation early, tell them you are part of the “Sail with Courtney” group. There will be a group BBQ and gathering that Saturday. Donations are being taken for the Young Survivors Coalition, a support group for young women that Courtney was very active in (email HarborPilot@pmyc.net for address details.)
